Little white, lacy, strappy things

My sons are home! The washing machine and dishwasher rumble incessantly, there is never enough milk, bread, cereal or red wine, casseroles bubble on the stove and the mother in me stirs and purrs contentedly, testosterone drifting through the house as their deep voices mingle and merge.

So why, I wonder, did I take a detour on my way to stock up again at Waitrose, to trawl through the racks of sale price clothes in Fat Face, discarding the sensible sweat shirts and fleecy, warm zippy things and finding my way to the little white, lacy, strappy vest top, to be secreted amongst the carrots and potatoes and meat and cheese? Perhaps my mind had drifted towards the Man in the Pink Shirt, currently battling the wind and tides somewhere off the South Coast, no doubt swathed in utilitarian waterproofs?

I suppose I could always hide it under a sensible fleece if I go sailing with him again. Only I would know it was there, surely. After all, if he had wanted a sensible woman, what on earth is he doing with me?

  1. Oooh Marianne, methinks you are rather taken with him ...

  2. Quite right Marianne! I'm sure it would make his day if such a pretty thing were to pop up from beneath a sober fleece.

And if it didn't - well, as you say, he can't have been the one for you anyway...

Am off to Italy on Saturday, so won't be able to watch for more posts of yours. Back in early September. (Hope you have another trip out on the boat!)

  6. It doesn't take much to make me buy frivolous things PITK, but point taken.

  7. loved your lacy purchase. i am all for wearing lovely things under utilitarian clothes. always wear my most frivolous underwear when in frumpy black suit mode at work and often wear spectacular knickers under my old gardening clothes just to get my money's worth, as my gran would say in other circumstances.

  9. Love this feeling of all the chicks back in the nest. My four will all be here together for the first time since September next week. Can't wait.

  11. Hello Elizabeth, hope you let a sliver of lace peep through under your frumpy black suits. Make everyone's day!

OM. given that you have a son, you will soon have plenty of testosterone wafting your way. Love my big boys.

Have a lovely time with your chicks @themill. I adore having them all home together - we rarely manage it as someone is always working/has plans. Sadly things are breaking up now, one is already back in London, the other off today after roast chicken and plum pie.

An Indian summer would be bliss.

  12. Made me smile to think of them in the nest, and all that washing! My pair are still young 6+14 and I dread the day when they will leave me...

Why is it we always feel better and more confident with nice underwear on whatever we wear on the outside! And as my Nan used to say, kyou never know when you might get run over!!

    warm wishes Marianne

  13. Hope not to get run over anytime soon, Angel. Enjoy your chicks, but remember that they leave so slowly you hardly notice, and then they keep coming back, so you can OD on mothering to your heart's content.

  18. Pixie, I don't know where you are in your life, but I hope things work out. I dread the day my youngest son leaves home - that will really be testing.

Just been speaking to my gorgeous man Merryweather - he's miles away on his boat and this is hard. Thank you for reading me - will visit you again soon.

Roller coaster ride really Snuffleupagus. Quite hairy.

Unapologetic Dick. What's wrong with that?

  19. Ah Marianne, we all need a bit of feminine lacey bits when we have a house full of testosterone - I know with a husband, two sons and three male cats and being the only woman in the house, I quite often can be found accpting deliveries from Victoria's Secret.

I look like a sack of potatoes in said ordered goodies, but at least I am in touch with my feminine side.

Pink shirt man going well then I see, good for you!

  22. Lovely thought - you in your Victoria's Secret undies, Secretary. I'm a bit of an M&S girl myself. How did the GCSE's go? Strings of As and A*s I would guess from what you have said.

Glad to hear we are treading the same path, Dick.

What a nice thought Debio and lovely to see you back. Will pop round asap.
